Deerpark to Herodsfoot circular walk

Deerpark to Herodsfoot

A woodland walk in what's likely to have been a mediaeval deer park to the site of Cornwall's second-largest gunpowder manufacturing operation, which despite exploding several times was sufficiently successful to give rise to a nearby sister site known as Trago Mills.

The route begins with a circle of Deerpark wood before crossing into Canakey wood and descending the valley to the stream. The route then follows the stream to the forest cabins situated around the lakes that once powered the waterwheels of the gunpowder mills and where some ruins remain hidden in the undergrowth. A woodland footpath leads to Herodsfoot and the walk returns via a small lane before a final pass through one side of Deerpark wood.

Highlights

  • Woodland flora including spectacular bluebells in spring
  • Lots of shade from hot summer sun
  • Can be split into separate 2.1 and 3 mile circular walks

Considerations

  • The edge of the public footpath leaving the woods towards Herodsfoot is eroded in places.
